Business Description
|
The Saumur Cave des Vignerons is in the heart of the Saumur Champigny vineyard. Located at the top of the Saint Cyr en Bourg hill, it looks like a temple of wine surrounded by vines. Twenty-five metres below the premises, a maze of thousand year-old galleries extending 7 kilometres houses a thriving concern. The white limestone, locally known as tuffeau, was first extracted by the Oratorian monks to build churches, houses and the famous Loire Valley chateaux. The site was bought by local winegrowers in 1957, who dug out two vertical shafts to make full use of gravity flow. This original conception enables various activities to take place on separate levels between the receiving platform, located above ground, and the vats 25 metres below.
